Why My Acre of Africa?
Southern African conservation budgets are being drastically slashed, due to immense pressure on the region's governments to deal with rising needs from the social and educational sectors. For Southern Africa's irreplaceable wildlife treasury, time is running out. Traditional methods of obtaining funding for conservation by requesting donations on a project-by-project basis are no longer adequate to prevent the disappearance - forever - of Africa's wildlife and wild places.
New funding models were urgently required.
My Acre of Africa is an innovative funding strategy for Southern African conservation and environmental education. It has the potential to be one of the world's greatest initiatives for achieving sustainable financing for the region's unique biodiversity. The project aims to raise an Endowment Fund of R3,5 billion ZAR - a significant capital base that will generate ongoing funding in the order of tens of millions of dollars each year through interest earned, stretching into the future. Where other funding mechanisms typically rely on continuous input of donations, My Acre of Africa is self-perpetuating, due to the sheer size of the original Endowment Fund.
The interest earned on the Endowment Fund will finance a wide range of Priority Conservation Projects throughout Southern Africa on an ongoing basis. The success of the Endowment Fund will be rooted in a state-of-the-art Environmental Education Facility to be built on the edge of South Africa's Kruger National Park. This Facility will not only be the premier environmental education centre for children in the region, but also, the centrepiece of the most ground-breaking fundraiser in conservation history - the place where My Acre of Africa's Bricks - each representing sponsorship by people throughout the world of an Acre of Africa - are laid.
